The decision: Skincare routines become confusing when every skin type is given a separate long checklist and optional treatments are presented as mandatory.

AM: cleanse as needed, optionally tone, use one optional targeted treatment, moisturize, then protect. PM: cleanse, optionally tone or treat, then moisturize. Choose textures by dry, oily or combination skin.

3 ways to build the system

Dry Skin Routine

AM: rinse or cleanse as comfortable, optional hydrating toner, optional hydration serum, richer moisturizer if needed, then SPF. PM: cleanse, optional toner, optional treatment, richer moisturizer. Minimal version still skips toner and treatment.

  • Cleanse: CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser with Hyaluronic Acid, 19 oz
  • Tone: CeraVe Hydrating Toner for Face, 6.8 fl oz
  • Treat: The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
  • Moisturize: CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, 8 fl oz
  • Protect: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Fluid Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 / CeraVe AM Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30, Face Sunscreen, 3oz

Oily Skin Routine

AM: cleanse only as needed, optional gentle toner, optional targeted serum, light moisturizer if separate from sunscreen, then SPF. PM: cleanse, optional toner or treatment, light moisturizer. Do not use toner as an extra stripping step.

  • Cleanse: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, Gentle Cleanser for Oily Skin, 19oz
  • Tone: Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Gentle Daily Facial Toner, Fragrance-Free, 8 fl oz
  • Treat: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
  • Moisturize: Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer
  • Protect: Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Absorbing Moisturizer, SPF 30, Oily Skin, 4oz

Combination Skin Routine

AM and PM use one balanced framework, with optional toner after cleansing, lighter hydration overall and extra moisturizer only where skin feels dry. Avoid building two complete routines. Minimal version skips toner and treatment.

  • Cleanse: Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser, Oily & Combination Skin, 16oz / CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser with Hyaluronic Acid, 19 oz
  • Tone: Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Gentle Daily Facial Toner, Fragrance-Free, 8 fl oz / CeraVe Hydrating Toner for Face, 6.8 fl oz
  • Treat: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% / The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
  • Moisturize: Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer / CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, 8 fl oz
  • Protect: CeraVe AM Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30, Face Sunscreen, 3oz

A few thoughtful decisions

Build the system

Choose the pieces that suit you. Your choices stay in this browser when you save them.

01 · Required

Cleanse

Remove the day’s buildup without chasing a tight, squeaky-clean finish.

PM cleansing is the dependable baseline. Morning cleansing can be lighter or skipped by some readers if their skin and clinician-directed routine allow; comfort is the test. Use one cleanser, lukewarm water and the product directions. Add micellar water only when makeup or tenacious sunscreen needs a separate removal step.

02 · Optional

Tone

Add an optional post-cleanse hydration or comfort step before treatment.

Toner is optional, not a second cleanser and not required to ‘balance’ every face. Use one only when its formula adds useful hydration or comfort. Apply after cleansing and before treatment or moisturizer according to the label. Skip it if it stings, dries the skin or merely duplicates a serum.

03 · Optional

Treat

Address one clear concern—or skip this block entirely.

Treatment is concern-based, not skin-type homework. Start without it if the baseline is new. When needed, choose one product, patch-test as directed, introduce it separately and follow the label. Do not stop or replace a prescription or clinician-directed treatment.

04 · Required

Moisturize

Use a texture that keeps skin comfortable rather than choosing by fear of oil or shine.

Dry skin may prefer a richer cream. Oily and combination skin can still benefit from moisturizer, often in a lighter facial texture. Apply after an optional treatment. The same moisturizer can work morning and night when it is comfortable and compatible with the rest of the routine.

05 · Required

Protect

Finish the morning routine with labeled broad-spectrum sunscreen; omit this step at night.

Choose a sunscreen you can apply consistently and follow its label for amount, timing and reapplication. The AAD recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher. A moisturizer with SPF can combine two morning roles when used in the labeled sunscreen amount; makeup with SPF is not an adequate substitute.

Why this system works

Choose your skin-type variation, start with the minimal cleanser–moisturizer–SPF baseline, then add toner and treatment only when each has a clear, non-duplicative job.
