The decision: Soft waves often fall flat because the hair is overloaded, sections are inconsistent, or the shape is disturbed before it cools.

Soft waves last longer when the routine controls moisture, section size, heat and cooling—not when it simply adds more products.

3 ways to build the system

Fast Everyday Waves

Use fewer, slightly larger sections, create a loose bend through the mid-lengths, let them cool, and finish with fingers. Best when speed matters more than precise symmetry.

  • Prep: CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray for Hair, 8 Oz
  • Section: Kitsch Creaseless Hair Clips, 4-Pack
  • Shape: Conair Double Ceramic 1-Inch Curling Iron
  • Set: Choose your own
  • Finish: Choose your own

Polished Soft Waves

Use consistent smaller sections around the crown and face, control direction, cool each curl fully, then break up the pattern and add light hold.

  • Prep: CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray for Hair, 8 Oz
  • Section: Kitsch Creaseless Hair Clips, 4-Pack
  • Shape: Conair Double Ceramic 1-Inch Curling Iron
  • Set: Choose your own
  • Finish: TRESemmé Extra Hold Hairspray, 14.6 Oz, Pack of 2

Low-Heat / Heatless Waves

Wrap slightly damp—not wet—hair in a heatless set, allow it to dry completely, then separate gently. Skip hot-tool heat; add only minimal finishing product if needed.

A few thoughtful decisions

01 · Required

Prep

Protect hair from styling heat and create a light, workable starting texture.

Start with fully dry hair for hot-tool waves unless the tool explicitly says otherwise. Apply heat protectant according to its label, distribute it evenly, and avoid saturating the roots.

02 · Required

Section

Create repeatable sections so each piece receives similar heat and tension.

Divide hair into lower, middle, crown, and face-framing zones. Clips keep finished hair separate and reduce unnecessary repeat passes.

03 · Required

Shape

Use one primary route to form a soft bend rather than a tight ringlet.

A one-inch iron is a practical starting size for many medium lengths. Curl away from the face around the hairline, vary direction through the back, and leave the ends slightly straighter for a softer result. Heatless wrapping is the lower-heat alternative.

04 · Required

Set

Preserve the wave while it cools, because cooling is what helps the new shape hold.

Release each curl into your palm for a few seconds or pin it loosely while it cools. Do not brush, tuck, or repeatedly touch warm sections.

We’re refreshing our recommendations for this role. Use a suitable piece you already own, or check back for product options.

05 · Optional

Finish

Soften the pattern and add only the amount of hold the day actually needs.

When every section is cool, rake through with fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Mist one lightweight finishing product from a distance; stop before the hair becomes stiff.
