The Fall Carry-On Capsule System
A six-part system for packing a small fall wardrobe that mixes into multiple outfits without taking over a carry-on.
Build this system ↓
The decision: Fall travelers often overpack bulky layers, duplicate outfit roles and extra shoes because changing temperatures make every possibility feel necessary.
Choose a compact palette, pack more tops than bottoms, use one main outer layer and limit shoes. Every clothing piece should work in at least two outfits before it earns carry-on space.

A few thoughtful decisions
Build the system
Choose the pieces that suit you. Your choices stay in this browser when you save them.
01 · Required
Color Palette
Set one dark neutral, one light neutral and one optional accent before choosing pieces.
Examples: black + cream + camel, charcoal + ivory + burgundy, or chocolate + oatmeal + denim. Keep shoes, bag and outer layer inside or adjacent to the palette so every combination feels deliberate.
We’re refreshing our recommendations for this role. Use a suitable piece you already own, or check back for product options.
02 · Required
Tops
Pack three tops with different weights: base, everyday and light knit.
For 3–5 days, use two easy base tops plus one sweater or cardigan. Each top should work with every bottom and under the chosen layer. Wear the bulkiest knit on travel day if needed.
03 · Required · Choose any that fit
Bottoms
Choose two repeatable bottoms that create distinct outfit shapes.
A practical pair is jeans plus trousers, or one dark casual bottom plus one polished option. Rewear bottoms and change the top, layer and shoe rather than packing a complete outfit for every day.
04 · Required
Layer
Take one main outer layer that works over every planned outfit.
Choose for the actual forecast: a leather-like jacket for dry city wear or a packable rain layer for wet conditions. If a second light layer is necessary, make it a compact cardigan or overshirt rather than another coat.
05 · Required · Choose any that fit
Shoes
Limit the capsule to two shoe categories, including the pair worn in transit.
Use one walkable everyday shoe and, only if plans require it, one slightly dressier or weather-ready option. Both should work with both bottoms. Wear the bulkier pair on travel day.
06 · Required · Choose any that fit
Bag
Use one carry-on, one compact day bag and only the organization that improves access.
Confirm airline dimensions before travel. Use cubes to separate the capsule rather than compressing in extra clothing, and keep toiletries in one organizer. A shoulder bag or tote should work with every outfit and carry the in-transit essentials.
